What Is a Fat Transfer?

A fat transfer is a procedure that involves the removal of unwanted fat cells from one area of the body, typically a problem area, followed by the preparation and re-injection of those fat cells into an area that needs added volume to create the most aesthetically pleasing appearance. Patients love this procedure because it allows them to address multiple areas of their body and achieve some incredible results.

This procedure is versatile in that it can augment and restore youthful fullness to different areas of the body and, in doing so, help restore volume, combat the aging process, and create your ideal body proportions using your own fat cells. This procedure can add volume to the face, restore youth to the hands, and reshape the breasts or buttocks.
_________

Treating the Face

The aging process results in volume loss as your body produces less hyaluronic acid. Additionally, facial fat distribution changes, and when that happens, many people turn to dermal fillers to improve their appearance and combat aging. A fat transfer allows you to use your fat cells as the most natural and long-lasting dermal filler. During the procedure, fat cells will be removed from your body through liposuction and then re-injected into some strategic areas of your face based on your cosmetic concerns.

Fat Transfer vs. Dermal Fillers

One of the benefits of using your fat cells to augment different areas of your face to enhance your appearance and combat aging is that you will not need touch-up treatments. Dermal fillers are a temporary solution to aging and require regular follow-up treatments once your body metabolizes the product. Your body will not metabolize your fat cells, but instead, you will get to enjoy permanent and natural-looking results.

If you are looking for a natural way to add volume to different areas of your face, specifically your cheeks or lips, this procedure may be the solution you’ve been looking for.
_________

Treating the Hands

The hands suffer from the aging process just like different areas of the body, so if you have noticed that your hands do not look as youthful as they used to, aging is probably to blame. Your hands lose volume just like your face does, but the signs of aging often become more noticeable on the hands because veins, bones, and tendons become more visible, which gives your hands an aged-looking appearance.

There is a simple solution that can help treat aging hands, and it is called a fat transfer. Fat will be removed from one area of your body and then re-injected into the backs of your hands to deliver natural and long-lasting results.
_________

Treating the Breasts or Buttocks

Not only can a fat transfer help restore volume to the face and hand, but it can also help you increase volume and shape to your breasts or buttocks. The Brazilian butt lift, also known as the BBL, is a procedure that involves the use of your fat cells to create new body proportions. If you want to reshape and increase the size of your breasts or buttocks but do not want to use an implant to do so, there is an alternative by using your own natural fat for augmentation.

During this procedure, the surgeon will use liposuction to remove unwanted fat cells from one area of your body, prepare them, clean them, and then re-inject them into the breasts or buttocks to help add volume and create your ideal body proportions. This procedure is the perfect way to naturally enhance your appearance, contour your body, and enjoy permanent results.
_________

How Does It Work?

During a fat transfer, the plastic surgeon will begin by removing unwanted fat cells from one of your problem areas. This is a common problem area like the hips, abdomen, or flanks for most. We will choose the right donor site and then use liposuction to gently remove the fat cells from the area.

You will be left with improved body contours, but the fat cells removed will be recycled, sorted, cleaned, and prepared into an injectable form and then administered to your face, hands, breasts or buttocks as needed.
_________

What Kind of Results Can I Expect?

One of the benefits of this unique procedure is that the results are permanent. Most of the fat cells re-injected into the body will remain in the area, and once they adhere to their new home, they will remain in that location for good.

It is important that you follow the post-procedure instructions carefully, including wear compression garments, so that all of the newly injected fat cells have the best chance of surviving in your desired treatment area. Patients who use this procedure to restore volume to their face, and hands or enhance the appearance of their buttocks can enjoy permanent and natural-looking results.
_________

Is It Right for Me?

The best candidates for this particular procedure are patients who are in good health and have an adequate supply of unwanted fat cells that can act as donor cells for their desired treatment area.

The best way to determine if this procedure is right for you is by scheduling an consultation with Dr. Jessica Shih. She will meet with you to discuss your cosmetic and aesthetic goals, evaluate your desired donor and treatment areas, explain the procedure, and confirm if you are a good candidate.
