What is an IPL Treatment?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments use different wavelengths of light energy to treat a variety of skin concerns. The pulses of light interact with your skin pigment and heat up to shed dead skin cells. This allows healthier skin cells to take their place. IPL therapy targets skin of a different color than the skin around it. This is known as skin blemishes. In addition to targeting skin pigmentation, IPL therapy can also break down damaged capillaries to reduce redness and inflammation.

What Can IPL Treat?

IPL therapy can successfully treat a number of skin concerns. We can create a customized treatment plan to target your specific concerns. This can be age-related or any other skin condition.

IPL for Aging Skin

IPL therapy is an effective age spot treatment. As you get older, your skin may develop new blemishes. IPL energy can eliminate these age spots and freckles to make you look younger than ever!

IPL for Sun Damage

Some of us spend more time in the sun than others. This may result in damaged skin, known as sun spots. If these sunspots make you feel conscious about your skin, try IPL for sun-damaged skin. It is a highly effective sun spot treatment for people of all ages and most skin types.

IPL for Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that causes redness and blushing. It also makes blood vessels more visible. It may even cause bumps to form on your skin. You can use IPL for rosacea so you can have smooth, even-toned skin.

IPL for Acne Scars

IPL therapy encourages the regeneration of skin cells. This means that it can reduce the appearance of acne scars. In addition to treating acne scars, IPL therapy can also treat acne.

Preparing for Your IPL Treatment

IPL therapy is a non-ablative treatment. This means it does not remove the top layer of your skin. However, it does damage certain skin cells so you can regenerate newer, healthier ones. To ensure your skin is in good condition before your IPL treatment, avoid excessive sun exposure and harsh exfoliants at least 14 days before the IPL photofacial. These things can make your skin more sensitive. We also recommend you wear SPF 30 or SPF 50 sunscreen to protect your skin.

Your IPL Procedure

An IPL treatment is quick and easy. While this does depend on the size of the area being treated, most patients can fit an IPL session into a lunch break. The treatment has been described as comfortable by many patients. However, a topical numbing cream can be applied to eliminate discomfort during your IPL treatment.

Your IPL Aftercare

Your skin will be slightly sensitive after the treatment, but the instant results make up for that. You expect to see smoother, clearer skin after a few days. There is no downtime for IPL therapy. However, your skin may be red for a few days. You should also treat your skin with extra care for the next few days after your session.

You can do this by staying out of direct sunlight or using an SPF 30 or SPF 50 sunscreen. We also recommend that you hold off on harsh exfoliants until the redness subsides. To keep your skin nourished and moisturized, drink plenty of water. These minor aftercare guidelines will ensure you get the best results from your IPL skin rejuvenation treatment.

IPL Results

As mentioned, IPL results are fairly immediate. As soon as the redness subsides, you will see a difference in your skin. As the skin cells shed, you will continue to see improvements. IPL can also stimulate the production of collagen. This means that it improves the texture and laxity of your skin, making it smoother and tighter. That is why IPL therapy is so effective for aging skin.

You will need a few treatments to see the full effects of IPL therapy. While this depends on your skin concern, many patients only need three treatments to reduce the appearance of blemishes and loose skin. Each session is spaced four weeks apart to allow your skin to heal. If you are using IPL for rosacea, you may need more sessions.

Suitable Candidates for IPL Photo Rejuvenation

IPL therapy is ideal for most skin concerns. If you have mild to moderate skin pigmentations or an uneven skin tone, you should consider IPL therapy. The best way to know if IPL therapy is right for you is to visit us for an initial consultation. This way, we can assess the condition of your skin and determine whether IPL therapy will treat your skin concern. We will also ask you about previous skin conditions and medications you are currently taking. Feel free to ask us questions about the treatment, so you can be at ease.
