What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a very common procedure that enhances the appearance of the breasts by augmenting your breasts. It has been performed for over 125 years, and now there are more ways than ever that your breasts can be enhanced. There are many types, shapes and sizes of implants to best suit your needs. Depending on your anatomy, implants can either be placed above or below your muscles. A full consultation with the surgeon will help you understand what suits you best.

Typically, this procedure is performed under general anesthesia. It can take between one and two hours to complete. After an initial evaluation to review your current aesthetic and cosmetic goals, you will receive a better idea of how long you can expect your procedure to last.

How Does This Procedure Work?

Breast enhancement works by adding implants or excess fat harvested from your own body to increase the size of your breasts. How it works varies from woman to woman depending on their individual goals. However, regardless of the exact placement of the incisions, implants will be inserted through the incisions. After the implants are placed above or below the muscles, the incisions will be sutured closed.

If fat is being grafted to augment your breasts, a small incision will be made in the donor area that the fat is harvested from. Through that incision, a tiny cannula is inserted with a suction device attached to the end. Fat cells are suctioned out through this cannula. Then, the harvested fat cells are prepared. The fat cells are then injected into strategic points in the breast or breasts.

Am I a Good Candidate for This Procedure?

You Are Worried About Asymmetry

If you are satisfied with the volume of breast tissue in only one breast or have asymmetry, you may be considered a good candidate for breast enhancement. Each breast can be augmented to a different degree in order to achieve symmetry.

You Feel Your Breasts Look Empty

Most women seek breast enhancement because they are dissatisfied with the size of their breasts. However, you may still be considered a good candidate for this procedure if you are dissatisfied with the shape of your breasts. If you feel like your breasts look a little deflated, implants may help you improve your self-confidence.

You Are at Least 18 Years of Age

To be a good candidate for any method of breast augmentation, Health Canada advises that women be at least 18 years old for saline-filled breast implants and 22 years old for silicone-filled breast implants.

You Are Interested in Removing a Little Excess Fat

If you are a little wary of saline or silicone breast implants, you are not alone. However, that does not mean that you should give up on your dream of achieving your ideal body. If you have excess fat in other regions of your body, like your back or stomach, Dr. Jessica Shih can remove some of the excess fat, clean and process it, and use it to augment one or both of your breasts.

You Are Healthy

You also must be in good health to qualify for breast enhancement. To reiterate, this procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia. To qualify for general anesthesia, your heart and lungs need to be in good health. It is even more important for your heart and lungs to be in relatively good health if you will be receiving other procedures, like liposuction, in conjunction with your breast enhancement.
_________

How Long Does Recovery Take?

As with any cosmetic procedure, there is a recovery period of at least one to two weeks following breast enhancement. How much time you will need to take off from work depends on the type of job you have, the extent of the procedure or procedures you opted for, and how healthy you were before the enhancement, among other factors. You can speed up your recovery by wearing your compression bra at all times, and only removing it for showering.
_________

The Bottom Line

Breast augmentation is a procedure designed to improve the shape and size of the breasts, and enhance self-confidence. Breast augmentation works through the insertion of implants or fat harvested from a donor area. If you are concerned about the size, shape, or symmetry of your breasts, there is a good chance that you will be considered a good candidate. However, your health must be reviewed thoroughly before a final determination can be made.
